An explosive thriller from director (Gerardo Naranjo), Miss Bala (bala is Spanish for bullet), which has been selected by this year’s festival invitee Gael García Bernal, tells the story of a 23-year-old girl (Stephanie Sigman) whose dreams of being crowned local beauty queen are co-opted by the violent drug wars that ravage Northern Mexico. Coerced by deadly threats into participating in narco-trafficking activities, she endures terrifying adventures that test her character and ultimately transform her. Set against the pitiless backdrop of an arid Mexican warzone, this film’s tremendous visual appeal mimics the beauty of our protagonist’s innocent girlhood, at odds with the harsh world that is thrust upon her. Heart-stopping action and a vulnerable and striking heroine make this a cinematic thrill that must be experienced.
