Directed by the always principled Icíar Bollaín (Even the Rain) this beautiful and inspiring film, based on a true story, follows the travails of Laia, a young teacher who moves from Spain to Kathmandu, Nepal during the early 1990s. She discovers dreary conditions there: abject poverty and a bleak educational system based on rote repetition and corporal punishment. Laia begins a crusade to change the academic system. She marries a local Nepalese man, initially for visa reasons, but soon warms to him and falls in love. Their relationship is tested as she struggles to found her own school and resist political pressure to adhere to the status quo. Verónica Echegui, our guest this year, embodies the character of Laia with passion and truthfulness. A touching and heartwarming experience not to be missed.
