A mysterious and affecting film starring our
guest Verónica Echegui, one of the most
engaging Spanish actresses of the present
day. The solitary life of Oscar (Rodrigo
Sáenz de Heredia), a security guard at
a semi-abandoned salt mine, is abruptly
interrupted by the visit of his pregnant sister
Maria and her new boyfriend Jean. There is
palpable tension between the siblings who
have not seen each other for over two years
and there are hints of taboo family secrets
and forbidden love. The sweeping visuals
and spare sound design (stripped of any
musical accompaniment) conspire to create
a mood that reveals the fascinating inner
turmoil of the characters. Manuel Martín
Cuenca’s sure-handed direction make for
an enthralling exploration of the human
condition. A solid and spellbinding film.
